Hey there, matt72! Thanks for reaching out to us. We will be more than happy to answer your question. You can leave the inner lid on or off while warming your food. The inner lid may hold its shape better if you leave it off or slightly ajar while you are warming your food. The food container lid and outer lid do not need to be secured while the unit is heating and warming the food, but is recommended to avoid spilling and to ensure the quickest heating time. We hope this helps. Thanks, and please stay safe!
