Slow-Cooked Pear Butter

Delectably soft and juicy, pears are a favorite fruit that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Chopped and tossed into a salad, pureed into butternut squash soup, blended with caramel or chocolate and served as dessert, grilled with pork chops or baked in a tasty pie, pears are a culinary staple.Thanks to their sweet, tender flesh but firm skin, pears are perfect for cooking. Crafting this homemade fruit butter from scratch, with the help of your Crock-Pot® 5-Quart Countdown Digital Slow Cooker, will not only provide you with a hearty supply of toast spread but also fill your home with the rich and flavorful aroma of pears slow-cooking.

Pear Butter
Fruity and spreadable, this pear butter can be enjoyed on far more than just your morning English muffin. Blend this pear butter with cream cheese for a delightful bagel topping. Use it in your next baking endeavor - from cookies to cupcakes. Add it to your morning yogurt and granola or even to your bowl of oatmeal. No matter how you choose to enjoy this delicious spread, the hint of blended nutmeg, ginger and cardamom bring about a taste that's simply irresistible.

This recipe creates about 3 pint jars of pear butter which can be refrigerator and kept for 2 to 3 weeks.


  • 12 medium pears
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 2 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom


  1. Peel, chop and core pears.
  2. Add chopped pears to your slow cooker.
  3. Top with brown sugar and apple juice, stirring gently to coat.
  4. Add cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, ginger and cardamom.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours.
  6. Several times throughout, stir the pear butter mixture to ensure even blending.
  7. Remove cinnamon sticks.
  8. Transfer half of pear mixture to blender or food processor.
  9. Pulse until pureed.
  10. Return blended half of pear butter to slow cooker and stir to combine.
  11. If a less chunky butter is desired, blend or puree both halves of mixture.
  12. Once cooled, can pear butter for later use or store in your refrigerator for 2 to 3 weeks.
