4 Easy Rainy Day Meals

Along with the welcomed mild temperatures and lovely spring flowers this time of year, also comes frequent rain showers. After the kids have enjoyed puddle jumping in their rain boots, bring the whole family inside to warm up and dry off with these four rainy day recipes for your slow cooker.

Wholesome and easy to prepare, these recipes can be expanded for the Crock-Pot® 8-Quart Manual Slow Cooker so that you'll make enough to share with the neighbors, or have leftovers for the entire week!

1. Honey Sesame Chicken
This rich and zesty recipe for honey sesame chicken is incredibly simple to prepare and wonderfully delicious to enjoy. It serves great over white rice.


  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, crushed
  • 2 pounds chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 small green pepper, thinly sliced (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish).


  1. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients through red pepper flakes.
  2. Season chicken with salt and pepper and place in bottom of a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker.
  3. Pour honey mixture over chicken.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 3 1/2 hours.
  5. Garnish with green pepper and sesame seeds.

2. Chicken Noodle Soup
This classic comfort food dish is a family-friendly option for any night of the week, especially when the pouring rain outside just won't let up. Again, the preparation time is minimal and the results are exceptional.


  • 3 large carrots, chopped
  • 6 large celery stalks, chopped
  • 1/4 small onion, peeled and root end intact
  • 2 large sprigs parsley
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves
  • 2 large sprigs thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • 2 pounds chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
  • 8 cups chicken broth, low-sodium
  • 4 cups wide egg noodles
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice, freshly squeezed.


  1. Add the carrots, celery, onion, sprigs parsley and thyme, bay leaf and 1 teaspoon salt to your 5- or 6-quart slow cooker.
  2. Rub chicken all over with 1 teaspoon salt and place on top of vegetables.
  3. Pour chicken broth on top.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.
  5. With 15 minutes remaining, remove chicken and stir in noodles.
  6. When noodles are done, turn off slow cooker.
  7. Remove the parsley and thyme stems, and add the shredded chicken and 1 tablespoon lemon juice.
  8. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.

3. Sloppy Joes
Bursting with flavor and zest, this sloppy joe meat sauce is made even easier with the Crock-Pot® 6-Quart Slow Cooker with Stovetop-Safe Cooking Pot, which allows you to brown the beef right in the stovetop-safe pot. As the ultimate one-pot solution, you can saute the beef directly in the removable cooking pot on the stovetop before binging it back to your slow cooker. The bonus? You'll eliminate unnecessary dirty dishes.


  • 3 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 cup onions, chopped
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 1/2 cup green pepper, chopped
  • 1 bottle chili sauce
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 16 sandwich buns, split.


  1. In the stovetop-safe removable cooking pot, cook ground beef over medium to high heat.
  2. Add onions, celery and bell pepper and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, until beef is cooked through. Stir frequently.
  3. Bring the beef mixture in the stovetop-safe pot to your slow cooker.
  4. Add chili sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours.
  6. Serve hot on sandwich buns with a side of potato chips.

4. French Onion Soup
It's a close tie between chicken noodle and French onion when it comes to the ultimate comfort soup - that's why they're both featured as slow-cooked recipes for a rainy day! This hearty recipe is perfect for getting warm inside on a damp, wet night. 


  • Slow cooker liners
  • 3 cups onions, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons margarine or butter, melted
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 4 cans ready-to-serve beef broth
  • 8 slices cheesy French bread.


  1. Place liner in your slow cooker, making sure it fits snugly.
  2. In lined slow cooker, mix onions and margarine.
  3. Cover and cook on high for 30 minutes, until onions begin to brown.
  4. In a bowl, mix flour, Worcestershire sauce, sugar and pepper.
  5. Pour flour mixture and broth over onions.
  6. Cover and cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or on low for 7 to 9 hours.
  7. Place one slice on hot, cheesy French bread on top of each bowl of soup.
