Warm Up With These After School Snacks

Looking for a simple and healthy snack to serve to your loved ones when they come home from school? Your slow cooker is there to help. Try whipping up one of these tasty treats for your young ones to enjoy at the end of a strenuous school day.

Creamy Yogurt
This snack is perfect for schoolchildren who are looking to express their creative sides after a long day of learning. Set out a plate of freshly sliced fruits, then allow your kids to add their own fruit to the final yogurt, courtesy of Crock-Pot Girl™ Jenn Bare. This not only ensures they get their daily servings of these essential nutrients, but also allows them to have a little more fun with their snack.

You'll need:

  • 1 gallon milk
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup powdered milk
  • 2 cups assorted fruits (berries are best)

Pour the gallon of milk in your Crock-Pot® Manual Slow Cooker, then cover the stoneware and allow the milk to cook for 2 1/2 hours on high. After the time is up, turn the slow cooker off and let the milk cool for 3 hours. Mix together yogurt and powdered milk, then stir into the slow cooker. Cover the stoneware, wrap it in a thick towel, and allow it to sit for 8 hours or until it has thickened. Stir the yogurt one more time to ensure it's smooth, then move to containers you can keep in the fridge. Serve your yogurt cold, encouraging your young chefs to stir in their favorite fruits.

Baked Sliced Apples
Searching for another creative way to get your kids to eat more fruit? Try turning these healthy snacks into irresistible bite-sized treats by baking them in your slow cooker. Jenn Bare's Slow Cooker Baked Sliced Apple recipe is perfect for serving your schoolchildren, and as an added bonus, there will be plenty of leftovers for tomorrow's lunch!

You'll need:

  • 3 1/2 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1/4 cup raisins 
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons apple pie spice
  • 2 tablespoons apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Coat the bottom of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Add apple slices and raisins to your stoneware, mixing them together with a wooden spoon. Pour in sugar, apple pie spice and apple juice, stirring the ingredients until they're well-blended. Before you cover the slow cooker, drizzle the butter on top of the apples. Set the appliance on low and cook for 4 to 6 hours. 

Due to the slow ramp up, and even heating of a slow cooker, recipes featured on this site can be cooked in a range of slow cooker sizes. Recipes can be increased or decreased by one quart size per the cooking instructions. For smaller sauces and dips that calls for 3 quarts or less, it is not recommended to alter the unit size.
