3 Types of Meat that Are Best When Cooked Slowly
Your slow cooker provides a simple and efficient way to prepare some of your favorite savory dishes. While your appliance does a great job at preparing vegetables, fruits and desserts, there are several types of meat that were seemingly made for the slow cooker.
1. Pulled Pork
Bring this dish to a spring picnic, treat your family at a reunion or enjoy it between a hamburger bun while you watch Netflix - no matter how your eat it, you won't be able to stop enjoying this Cola Pulled Pork.
- 1 5-pound pork shoulder
- 2 8-ounce cans cola
- 1 packet poultry seasoning
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Chile powder
- 1 tablespoon steak sauce
- 1 tablespoon corn starch
- Salt and pepper to taste
Pour both cans of cola in your slow cooker, then stir in the poultry seasoning. Place the pork shoulder in the appliance, using a baster to coat the meat in liquid before covering. Allow the pork to cook for about 4 to 6 hours on high, or 6 to 8 hours on low. Remove the pork and begin shredding with a fork and knife.
In a medium sauce pot, combine ketchup, Chile powder, steak sauce, corn starch, the liquids from the slow cooker, and salt and pepper to taste. Keep the ingredients on low heat while you stir them together - when the sauce thickens, pour over the pulled pork.
2. Rump Roast

- 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon celery salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder
- 4 pounds rump roast
- 1/2 cup water or beef broth
In a small bowl, combine black pepper, paprika, chili powder, celery salt, cayenne pepper, garlic powder and mustard powder. Rub the mixture on the surface of the rump roast, place it in the slow cooker, and add 1/2 cup broth or water. Cover the appliance and cook for about 8 to 10 hours on low.
3. Beef Brisket
Slow cooked beef brisket? Yes, please!
- 3 to 4 pounds trimmed beef brisket
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 2 ounces liquid smoke
- 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon onion salt
- 1 teaspoon celery salt
Place the beef brisket in your slow cooker. Coat the meat with water, liquid smoke and Worcestershire sauce, then top with salt, pepper, garlic salt, onion salt and celery salt. Cover the slow cooker and place it in the fridge for 8 hours. Remove the appliance from the fridge, set it on low and allow it to cook for 8 hours.
