Heating Up Holidays: 3 Thanksgiving Slow Cooker Sides to Try

Thanksgiving is approaching quickly, and while you're already planning just how you're going to top that turkey, you need to start sifting through the various sides that can accentuate your main dishes. From stuffings to soups, there are several sides that can be prepared in your slow cooker just in time for your Thanksgiving feast.

Looking for a fun and easy way to prepare your side dishes this year? Consider setting out one of these slow cooker treats from Crock-Pot® Brand Ambassador Jenn Bare.

1. Creamy Pumpkin Bisque
Pumpkin is a popular flavor this fall - you're likely already planning a pie that uses this vegetable, but think about this filling bisque for one of your first courses. Start by plugging in your 4-quart Crock-Pot® Slow Cooker and adding 30 ounces of pumpkin pie mix, 15 ounces of canned pumpkin, 28 ounces of vegetable broth, 1/2 cup water, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cover your bisque and let it cook for 4 to 5 hours on low, then stir in 1 cup half-and-half. Cover the slow cooker again and let it cook for an additional 15 minutes. Be sure to serve with a dollop of sour cream!

2. Balsamic Brussels Sprouts
As you're loading up on greens to set out on the table, don't forget this delectable spin on Brussels sprouts. Add 8 ounces of trimmed and quartered Brussels sprouts to your slow cooker, along with 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons red wine, 4 sprigs fresh thyme, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, 1/2 cup water, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook the veggies for 2 hours on high and remember to remove the thyme sprigs before serving.

3. Cauliflower Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Mashed potatoes are essential for any Thanksgiving feast, but try this unconventional dish that swaps potatoes for cauliflower. Cut one head of cauliflower into bite-sized pieces, then place them at the bottom of the slow cooker. Combine 3 cups vegetable broth, 1 tablespoon sea salt, 4 minced garlic cloves and 1 bay leaf to the slow cooker, and allow the ingredients to cook for 4 to 6 hours on low. When the time is up, remove the bay leaf and drain any liquid, then put 1 tablespoon of butter in the slow cooker. Using a potato masher or small mixer, cream the combination together until it has reached your desired consistency. 

Due to the slow ramp up, and even heating of a slow cooker, recipes featured on this site can be cooked in a range of slow cooker sizes. Recipes can be increased or decreased by one quart size per the cooking instructions. For smaller sauces and dips that calls for 3 quarts or less, it is not recommended to alter the unit size.
