Can You Make Yogurt in Your Slow Cooker?

Yes you can! Not only is it possible, it's very easy to make your own delicious and creamy yogurt in your slow cooker. Plus, making your own yogurt is cost effective and also allows you to get creative and control exactly what is going into it with your own ingredients. While you will need to use a portion of store-bought yogurt as a starter for your first batch, you'll be able to use your own for the next one. Using a medium-sized slow cooker such as a Crock-Pot® 4-Quart Manual Slow Cooker, all you need are a few ingredients and you'll be ready to start making your own yogurt.

Slow-Cooked Yogurt
Everything tastes better when it's homemade and yogurt is no different. Once you've gotten the basic recipe down, try experimenting with new flavors and thicknesses.

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups whole milk (1/2 gallon)
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt with live-active cultures
  • Thick kitchen towel
  • Fresh or frozen fruit of your choice.

Directions

  1. To begin, pour the half gallon of milk into your slow cooker and turn it to the high heat setting. Bring the temperature to somewhere between 180 and 185 degrees.
  2. When the milk has reached this temperature, after about 2 to 2 1/2 hours, turn off your slow cooker and let the temperature drop to 115 degrees.
  3. Bring the 1/2 cup of yogurt to room temperature.
  4. To mix the yogurt into the milk, bring 1 cup of the milk into a small bowl and very slowly and gently blend with the yogurt. 
  5. Drizzle this mixture over the milk in your slow cooker but do not stir it in.
  6. Be sure that your device is unplugged and wrap the thick kitchen towel around the pot for insulation.
  7. Let it sit for 8 hours overnight.
  8. After this time the yogurt will have thickened.
  9. Set aside 1/2 cup in a sealed container for the starter yogurt for your next batch.
  10. Then blend in your favorite fruit and stir well.
  11. Store the yogurt in airtight containers and refrigerate before eating.
  12. Enjoy with your choice of topping such as granola, flax seeds or sliced fruit!
