Slow-Cooked Oatmeal
First you need to know how to make warm, creamy oatmeal in your slow cooker. Once you've gotten down the basics you can add anything from fruits and spices to vegetables, meats, chocolate and peanut butter! The more additions you make to the oats in your slow cooker, the more mouth-watering the aroma drifting through your kitchen will be.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup steel cut oats
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • Pinch of salt
  • Brown sugar, to taste.

Directions

  1. Add the steel cut oats and water to your slow cooker.
  2. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, overnight.
  3. In the morning, stir in half-and-half, salt and brown sugar to taste.
  4. If desired, top with fresh fruit, nuts, granola, maple syrup, peanut butter or honey.

1. Add a Savory Egg
Adding a basted egg not only mixes up the texture of your morning oatmeal, it also adds piquant flavor and extra protein. Just before your oatmeal is finished, baste an egg by following the steps below.

Ingredients:

  • Slow-cooked oatmeal
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons shredded Gruyere cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste.

Directions

  1. Heat 2 teaspoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Crack an egg into a custard cup or small bowl.
  3. Gently slide the egg into the melted butter and cook for a bout 30 seconds.
  4. Once the edges of the egg turn white, add 1 tablespoon of water to the pan.
  5. Then immediately cover, to capture the steam and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. The egg is ready when the white is set and the yolk begins to form.
  7. Bring the finished oatmeal to a bowl and blend in olive oil and cheese.
  8. Top with the basted egg, season with salt and pepper and enjoy!

2. Add a Taste of Vermont
Bacon and maple syrup have pretty much become synonymous with a classic American breakfast. But have you ever considered combining them with oatmeal for an irresistibly sweet and savory meal? This recipe is perfect for filling up on a cold morning.

Ingredients:

  • Slow-cooked oatmeal
  • 1 to 2 slices bacon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons flax seed
  • 3 tablespoons slivered almonds
  • Maple syrup, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon.

Directions

  1. Fry bacon over medium-low heat in a skillet, cooking for about 5 minutes on both sides until it is nice and crisp.
  2. Pat bacon dry and slice into small pieces.
  3. Bring the finished oatmeal to a bowl and whisk in salt and flax seed.
  4. Top with sliced bacon, maple syrup and a dash of cinnamon.

3. Add a Chocolaty Twist
If you're in the mood for something sweet, look no further than this recipe for dark chocolate pomegranate oatmeal. The rich chocolate is the perfect balance to the sweet pomegranates, which also provide a great crunch. This is a dish that's light, yet still packed with flavor.

Ingredients:

  • Slow-cooked oatmeal
  • Seeds from 1 pomegranate, divided in two
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dark cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave
  • Handful of dark chocolate chips, optional.

Directions

  1. Blend half of the pomegranate seeds in a food processor and grind until they form a pulpy juice.
  2. Strain the bits of seeds from the liquid.
  3. Just before your oatmeal is finished, add the pomegranate juice and stir until a desired consistency is reached.
  4. Add in the cocoa powder, vanilla and choice of sweetener. 
  5. Top with remaining seeds and chocolate chips and enjoy!
