Create the Best Caramel Candy Apples with your Slow Cooker
With Halloween already on the mind, it's time to share a sweet concoction for turning crisp, juicy apples into delicious caramel candy apples in your slow cooker in just a few simple steps. This perfect fall treat is super easy with the Crock-Pot® Slow Cooker On-the-Go Kit. Not only does the tool melt candy evenly, but you can also have your children join in on the fun of making these candy apples without worrying about the pot getting too hot.
1. Melt the Caramel
There are just two simple ingredients needed to make this treat with your slow cooker: caramels and water. Place two 14-ounce packages of unwrapped caramels into a large slow cooker with 1/4 cups of water. Cover the pot and cook on high for 1 to 2 hours, until the caramel is shiny and easily stirred.
2. Prepare the Apples and Toppings
Firm, crisp apples without wax work best for this recipe. If you do buy apples covered in wax, you can use baking soda or boiling water to take it off. Doing so will allow the caramel to stick to the apples. Remove the apple stems and push popsicle sticks 3/4 inches down into the apple. Arrange various bowls of candy toppings such as M&Ms, chopped snickers, crushed Oreos, sprinkles and marshmallows to cover the apples with later.
3. Making the Candy Apples
Once the caramel is completely melted, turn the slow cooker to low. Hold the stick of the apple and dip them one by one into the hot caramel, turning them slowly to ensure that the entire surface is coated. Scrape off excess caramel from the bottom and then roll each apple in the desired toppings. Place apples on wax paper until they harden and are ready to enjoy!
