Crocktober Recipes to Make Your Apartment Smell Like Home
There are certain scents that will always remind you of home. If you're from the South, the smell of barbecue and collard greens may bring back childhood memories, while those from coastal regions may feel nostalgic after getting a whiff of fresh seafood.
Regardless of the region in which you grew up, there are several staple scents that can contribute to the cozy atmosphere of your apartment.
Sinful Cinnamon Buns
Few people can resist the sweet smell of cinnamon buns. For an unconventional spin on this traditional dish, consider using your slow cooker to make a cinnamon roll and sweet potato gratin. Begin by arranging 1 pound of peeled and sliced sweet potatoes on the bottom of your slow cooker, topping with 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese. Layer two more rounds of sweet potatoes and parmesan. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of heavy cream, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne, then lightly coat the sweet potatoes with the mixture. Slice 2 tablespoons of butter into small pieces and arrange the pieces in the slow cooker.
Open a can of packaged cinnamon rolls and start unrolling each one so they're long strips of cinnamony dough. Arrange the unrolled pieces on top of the potatoes in a circular pattern until the sweet potatoes are covered. Dot the top with an additional 2 tablespoons of butter. Cook this meal in your slow cooker for 4 hours on high, then serve along with the icing from the rolls.
Freshly Baked Bread
Warm, fresh-from-the-oven bread is not only one of the tastiest meals you can prepare in your slow cooker, but it fills your living space with a tantalizing aroma that's sure to remind you of home. Try this apple pecan bread pudding for a delicious dish that's ideal for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
You'll need one loaf of day-old bread that's been cut into bite-sized pieces. Coat the bottom of your Crock-Pot® Manual Slow Cooker with butter. Add your chopped bread, 3 cups of cubed Granny Smith apples and 1 cup of chopped pecans, stirring them together. In a large bowl, combine 8 whole eggs, 1 can of evaporated milk, 1/2 cup apple cider, 1 cup of packed light brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of ground allspice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Pour the mixture in the slow cooker then allow the pudding to cook for 3-4 hours on low. Serve the bread pudding with ice cream or caramel sauce.
