Heating Up Holidays: Sweet Takes on Stuffing

Few side dishes are as important to your Thanksgiving feast as stuffing. While you're likely to have this side situated on your Thanksgiving table, it's unlikely your dish will have the same ingredients as your next door neighbor's. 

This year, embrace your sweet tooth as you're picking ingredients to put in your stuffing. Consider the following fruit-based dishes to set out for your guests this season.

Apple Bacon Stuffing
This tasty treat has flavors for everyone - fruit fans and meat lovers alike will be fighting for this stuffing with apples, bacon and toasted pecans. Its unconventional yet delicious flavors are ideal for serving alongside your more traditional dishes, like mashed potatoes and yams.

In a large bowl, toss together 8 cups of cubed bread, 2 peeled and cored apples that have been cut into 1/2-inch pieces, 1 cup toasted pecans and 1 piece of minced fresh sage. Coat the bottom of a large skillet in olive oil and sautée 4 stalks of celery that have been cut into 1/2-inch pieces, 2 minced shallots, 2 cloves minced garlic, 2 cups chopped mushrooms and 1/2 pound bacon that's been sliced in 1/4-inch pieces. Allow the ingredients to simmer for about 4 to 5 minutes, then add 5 cups of chicken stock. 

Add the dry mixture to your Crock-Pot® Casserole Crock Slow Cooker, then pour the sautéed mix on top. Top with salt and pepper to taste, then cover. Allow the dish to cook on high for 3 to 5 hours, or until the stuffing has had a chance to bind. 

Baked Pineapple Stuffing
If you're looking to move away from apples for a sweeter option, consider putting pineapple in your stuffing with this recipe from Crock-Pot® Brand Ambassador Jenn Bare. 

Begin by lining the bottom of your slow cooker with a spritz of nonstick cooking spray. Be sure to coat the sides as well, as this will make the process of removing the stuffing much easier. In a large bowl, combine 20 ounces of crushed pineapple, 1/4 cup evaporated milk, 1 cup of packaged cornbread stuffing crumbs, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup melted butter and 3 eggs. Mix the ingredients well then use a wooden spoon to transfer the mix to your slow cooker. Cover the dish and let it cook on high for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Jenn Bare noted that this particular sweet blend is ideal for serving along with ham, as the savory flavors complement each other well.

Recipes can be increased or decreased by one quart size per the cooking instructions. For smaller sauces and dips that calls for 3 quarts or less, it is not recommended to alter the unit size.
